Calcium carbide is the main component of calcium carbide, synonym calcium acetylene, chemical formula CaC2, UN No.1402. Calcium carbide is a green or gray-black powder or blocky solid with a garlic smell. In industry, calcium carbide is commonly mixed with water to produce acetylene gas; it is also used in the smelting industry as a reducing agent and desulfurizing agent. Calcium carbide is flammable when it meets water. If excessive water is added to it, calcium hydroxide and acetylene will be generated.
